Our tips to prevent dry mouth

Everyone says it is important to stay well-hydrated in the summer; however, many often lose this good habit in the fall. You may be taking medication for seasonal allergies, colds, acne, diarrhea, asthma, etc., which may cause your mouth to be dry. If saliva deficiency is not serious in itself, it can cause bad breath or lead to cavities. Whatever the cause, these tips will help you (re)gain control:

  • Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste and use dental floss twice per day
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary, energy or citrus drinks
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine intake
  • Don’t smoke
  • Breathe through your nose and not your mouth
  • Sleep with a humidifier
  • Chew gum or suck on sugarless candy (avoid lemon flavour)
  • Use saliva substitutes sold in pharmacies and lip moisturizers
  • Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and for a host of other practical tips
