Your dentists in Montreal answer your questions
How old should my child to see a dentist for the first time?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends bringing your child about six months after the appearance of his or her first tooth. Do not wait until your child is over two years old.
Do I need to have my child's cavity or broken primary tooth repaired, knowing that the tooth will fall later?
It is recommended to repair the primary tooth as it aids chewing, prepares room for its permanent tooth and prevents your child from possible difficulties at home or at school.
What is fluorosis?
Dental fluorosis is only manifested in the child by white spots on his or her teeth. Children under the age of six should be supervised when brushing to avoid swallowing too much toothpaste. If less than three years old, an adult must brush a child’s teeth.
Do I have to floss during every brushing?
Flossing dislodges plaque. Daily flossing is recommended, preferably in the evening before bedtime.
My gums bleed since I use dental floss. What should I do?
Sometimes bleeding occurs when you first start flossing. If your bleeding persists after a few days, contact us as it may be the first sign of gingivitis.
Can I whiten my teeth if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We do not recommend any teeth whitening treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
I would like to have an oral piercing. Is it dangerous for my teeth?
The Ordre des dentistes du Québec does not recommend oral piercings. An oral piercing can be risky for your dental and overall health.
Is a gum transplant really worth it?
Yes. It prevents progressive loosening of your teeth and can cover an exposed root. The benefits often last several years—if not an entire lifetime.
I practice a sport with physical contact. Do I really need a mouthguard?
Absolutely! It protects your teeth and reduces the risk of hurting your lips, cheeks, tongue and jaws.
I want to have a dental jewel. Do you offer this service?
Yes. We have small ornaments available, which are easy to install and remove. All dental jewels are applied under strict aseptic conditions at our clinic.
How long does tooth whitening last?
Dental whitening does not last a lifetime. Its duration is variable according to your habits and genetics. It should be maintained on a regular basis.
Can I keep my natural teeth up to 100 years old?
Yes, it is very possible. Several preventive treatments exist today to help you keep them.
I had orthodontics when I was young. My teeth have become crooked over the years. Can I redo a treatment?
Yes. A retainer will have to be worn at night or a permanent lingual wire will be glued to the back of your incisors to keep them straight in the long run.
I postponed my gum transplant because I'm afraid of pain. What should I do?
The graft is performed under local anesthesia, which ensures total comfort during the procedure. Anti-inflammatory medication is prescribed for the first 2 days to mitigate the pain. By following the postoperative instructions, normally the healing is almost complete after this time. However, failure to follow postoperative instructions may result in delayed healing for up to 2 weeks and prolonged discomfort.
Will a snoring device move my jaws?
If the device is well-adjusted and the post-insertion follow-up is ensured, especially during the first year, very few irreversible complications occur.
